ALBA IULIA
Located in the western part of Transylvania, in Alba Iulia we can see the largest fortress in Romania, built in Vauban style, with an area of 110 ha, 7 bastions, 6 ravelines and 6 access gates.
It was built by the Habsburg Empire in the 18th century (1715 – 1738). Alba Iulia has a history of almost two
thousand years and was founded by the Roman Empire after the conquest of Dacia at the beginning of the 2nd century AD. In the medieval times, Alba Iulia was the capital of Transylvania.
Here is the tomb of Iancu de Hunedoara (Johannes de Hunyad / Hunyadi János), one of the greatest military commanders in Europe in the 15th century. His tomb is in the Roman Catholic Cathedral
of St. Michael, the oldest cathedral from Romania. We can not forget that Alba Iulia hosted the Great National Gathering on December 1st 1918, when Romanian delegates voted for the union of Transylvania, Banat, Crișana, Sătmar and Maramureș with the Kingdom of Romania. Thus, the city of Alba Iulia remains in the hearts of the Romanian people and awaits you with many beautiful places to discover!

Alba Free Tours was established in 2024 as the third project of it’s kind coordinated by the Alternative Tourism Association.
We started this project with the aim to promote Alba Iulia – a city located in the Western part of Transsylvania. It’s beautiful buildings and amazing fortress have a lot o wonderful stories that need to be told and our tour is the perfect option to hear them out!
Alternative Tourism Association was founded in 2015 by a group of young people from Arad who were willing to help boosting local and national tourism using alternative tourism as a tool. After starting the Free Tours projects, we also opened an Alternative Tourism School with professionals from various domains, aiming to deliver well prepared personnel for the tourism industry in Romania and, why not, Europe.
